Victoria Nelson-Laryea
PMHNP-BC  |  Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner

Victoria's story begins in 1994 — not in a university lecture hall, but at the bedside as a Certified Nursing Assistant. Victoria's Story

From the Bedside to Your Side

30+ years of earned clinical wisdom. Real compassion. Real results. — Victoria Nelson-Laryea, PMHNP-BC

From Bedside Nurse to Psychiatric Expert

Victoria Nelson-Laryea, PMHNP-BC — Victory Village Mental Health & Wellness

My journey in healthcare began in 1994 when I started as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) in Virginia. From the very first day, I knew I had found my calling — to be present for people during their most vulnerable moments and to make a real difference in their lives.

In 1996, I advanced to become a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), deepening my clinical skills across a remarkable range of settings: nursing homes, correctional facilities, HIV counseling centers, infectious disease units, crisis management teams, home health agencies, and psychosis units. Each experience shaped my understanding of the human condition and the complex intersection of medical, mental, and social health.

After years of watching patients receive fragmented care — a prescription here, a referral there — I made a decision: I would specialize in psychiatric nursing and build a practice that treated the whole person. That decision led me to earn my Board Certification as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC).

Victory Village Mental Health & Wellness was born from that journey. I named it "Victory Village" because I believe healing is a communal act — every person who walks through our doors deserves to find their own victory, and we celebrate every milestone together.

Today, I bring all 30+ years of that experience to every patient I see. No rushing. No one-size-fits-all solutions. Just honest, thorough, compassionate care — the kind I would want for my own family.

Conditions We Treat

Specialized psychiatric care for 11 mental health conditions — with treatment tailored to your unique story and needs

What You're Navigating Matters

Click any condition to learn more — including symptoms, Victoria's treatment approach, and when to seek help.

Depression

More than sadness — a medical condition affecting mood, energy, sleep, and daily functioning.

Depression (Major Depressive Disorder) is one of the most common mental health conditions worldwide, yet it remains widely misunderstood. It is not weakness, laziness, or a choice — it is a complex medical condition involving changes in brain chemistry, genetics, hormones, and life circumstances.

At Victory Village, Victoria takes a root-cause approach. Before prescribing, she investigates contributing factors including thyroid function, vitamin D and B12 levels, sleep quality, and psychosocial stressors. This comprehensive approach often produces results that medication alone cannot.

Common Symptoms

  • Persistent sadness, emptiness, or hopelessness
  • Loss of interest in activities once enjoyed
  • Fatigue and loss of energy
  • Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
  • Changes in appetite and weight
  • Sleep disturbances (insomnia or hypersomnia)
  • Thoughts of worthlessness or guilt

When to Seek Help

If you've experienced five or more of these symptoms for at least two weeks, or if depressive feelings are interfering with your work, relationships, or daily life, it's time to reach out. You do not need to be in crisis to deserve care.

Anxiety Disorder

Persistent, excessive worry that interferes with daily life and relationships.

Anxiety disorders affect millions of people and are among the most treatable mental health conditions when properly diagnosed and cared for. Anxiety goes beyond normal worry — it becomes a persistent, often debilitating force that affects work, relationships, health, and quality of life.

Common Symptoms

  • Excessive, hard-to-control worry
  • Racing thoughts and restlessness
  • Physical symptoms: racing heart, shortness of breath, sweating
  • Avoidance of triggering situations
  • Difficulty sleeping due to worry
  • Irritability and fatigue

When to Seek Help

If anxiety is regularly interfering with your daily function, relationships, or quality of life — or if you're living in a constant state of fear or dread — professional support can be transformative. Treatment works.

Bipolar Disorder

A mood disorder characterized by episodes of mania and depression, requiring precise, ongoing management.

Bipolar disorder involves dramatic shifts in mood, energy, and activity — from periods of high energy and euphoria (mania) to deep depression. With the right treatment, people with bipolar disorder can achieve stability and lead full, meaningful lives.

Common Symptoms

  • Episodes of elevated or irritable mood (mania/hypomania)
  • Decreased need for sleep during manic episodes
  • Racing thoughts and impulsive behavior
  • Periods of severe depression between mood episodes
  • Significant changes in energy and activity levels

When to Seek Help

Bipolar disorder requires careful, specialist-level psychiatric management. If you experience extreme mood swings that affect your functioning, a thorough evaluation is essential to get the right diagnosis and treatment plan.

Schizophrenia

A serious mental health condition requiring expert, compassionate long-term care.

Schizophrenia is a complex condition that affects how a person thinks, feels, and behaves. With proper treatment and support, many people with schizophrenia can manage their symptoms and live meaningful lives. Victoria's experience in psychosis units gives her a depth of understanding rarely found in outpatient settings.

Common Symptoms

  • Hallucinations (hearing or seeing things others don't)
  • Delusions (firmly held false beliefs)
  • Disorganized thinking and speech
  • Reduced emotional expression
  • Difficulty with daily functioning and self-care

When to Seek Help

Early intervention in schizophrenia significantly improves long-term outcomes. If you or a family member is experiencing these symptoms, please reach out — compassionate, expert help is available.

Psychosis

Early intervention for psychotic symptoms with close monitoring and compassionate care.

Psychosis refers to a state in which a person loses touch with reality — experiencing hallucinations, delusions, or severely disorganized thinking. Early and effective treatment dramatically improves outcomes. Victoria's extensive experience in psychosis units means she approaches these symptoms with clinical precision and genuine compassion.

Common Symptoms

  • Hallucinations (visual or auditory)
  • Fixed false beliefs not grounded in reality
  • Disorganized thoughts and speech
  • Significant behavioral changes
  • Withdrawal from reality and social relationships

When to Seek Help

If you or someone you love is showing signs of psychosis, please seek care immediately. Early treatment makes a significant difference in recovery and long-term stability.

Persistent Depressive Disorder

Long-term, low-grade depression treated with strategies for lasting mood improvement.

Also known as dysthymia, Persistent Depressive Disorder (PDD) is a chronic form of depression that, while less intense than Major Depressive Disorder, persists for two years or more. Many people with PDD don't seek help because they assume feeling this way is "just who they are." It isn't — and treatment can produce meaningful improvement in mood, energy, and outlook.

Common Symptoms

  • Chronically low or sad mood lasting 2+ years
  • Low self-esteem and feelings of inadequacy
  • Poor concentration or difficulty making decisions
  • Fatigue and low energy
  • Hopelessness about the future

When to Seek Help

If you've felt persistently low, unmotivated, or hopeless for months or years — even without dramatic depressive episodes — PDD may be the explanation. Treatment works. You deserve to feel better.

Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)

Chronic, excessive worry about multiple areas of life that is difficult to control.

GAD involves persistent, excessive worry about a wide range of everyday concerns — work, health, finances, family — that is difficult to control and often disproportionate to the actual risk. It frequently coexists with depression and other anxiety disorders.

Common Symptoms

  • Excessive worry that is hard to control
  • Restlessness, feeling keyed up or on edge
  • Irritability and mood changes
  • Muscle tension and physical discomfort
  • Sleep difficulties and fatigue

When to Seek Help

If worry is consuming significant time and energy and interfering with daily life, GAD is likely treatable with the right support. Help is available and very effective.

Social Anxiety Disorder

Intense fear of social situations and negative judgment that significantly limits daily life.

Social anxiety disorder goes far beyond shyness. It involves intense fear of embarrassment, judgment, or rejection in social situations — powerful enough to restrict career, relationships, and quality of life. It is highly treatable, and our telehealth option is often particularly helpful for patients with social anxiety.

Common Symptoms

  • Intense fear of being judged or embarrassed
  • Avoidance of social situations
  • Physical symptoms: blushing, sweating, trembling
  • Anticipatory anxiety before social events
  • Difficulty speaking up or maintaining eye contact

When to Seek Help

If social fear is causing you to miss opportunities or feel isolated, professional support can make a transformative difference. Our telehealth appointments are especially accessible for patients with social anxiety.

Narcissistic Personality Traits & Related Challenges

Patterns of thought and behavior affecting relationships, self-image, and emotional regulation.

Narcissistic personality traits exist on a spectrum and can significantly affect relationships and emotional wellbeing. Victoria approaches this sensitive area with clinical nuance and without judgment, helping patients understand their patterns, their impact, and pathways toward more fulfilling connections.

Common Presentations

  • Difficulty with empathy and perspective-taking
  • Need for admiration or validation
  • Sensitivity to criticism or perceived slights
  • Difficulty maintaining close relationships
  • Underlying vulnerability, shame, or low self-esteem

When to Seek Help

If you or someone close to you is experiencing relationship difficulties or patterns of behavior that repeatedly cause harm, a compassionate evaluation can offer insight and a path forward.

ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder)

A neurodevelopmental condition affecting attention, impulse control, and activity levels across the lifespan.

ADHD is not just a childhood condition. Millions of adults live with undiagnosed or undertreated ADHD — struggling with focus, organization, time management, and emotional regulation while wondering why they can't seem to "get it together." A proper evaluation and treatment plan can be genuinely life-changing.

Common Symptoms

  • Difficulty sustaining attention on tasks
  • Impulsivity and poor decision-making
  • Restlessness, inability to sit still
  • Forgetfulness and disorganization
  • Emotional dysregulation and mood swings
  • Hyperfocus on preferred activities

When to Seek Help

If attention and organization challenges are consistently affecting your work, relationships, or self-esteem, an ADHD evaluation is worthwhile. Adults with ADHD frequently experience significant life improvement with proper treatment.

PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder)

A trauma-related condition causing persistent, distressing reactions after experiencing or witnessing traumatic events.

PTSD can develop following any traumatic experience — combat, accidents, assault, childhood abuse, medical trauma, natural disasters, or witnessing violence. It is not a sign of weakness; it is the nervous system's response to overwhelming experience. With compassionate, trauma-informed care, PTSD responds well to treatment.

Victoria's experience in correctional facilities and crisis settings means patients with PTSD are met with a deep understanding of trauma's complexity and its intersection with other conditions.

Common Symptoms

  • Intrusive memories, flashbacks, nightmares
  • Avoidance of trauma-related thoughts or reminders
  • Hypervigilance and exaggerated startle response
  • Emotional numbness or detachment
  • Sleep difficulties and irritability
  • Negative thoughts about self, others, or the world

When to Seek Help

If you've experienced trauma and find that intrusive memories, nightmares, or emotional reactions are disrupting your life, please reach out. Trauma-informed care can help you process your experience and rebuild a sense of safety and control.

How Insurance Works With Us

Verifying Your Coverage

Before your first appointment, our team will verify your mental health benefits directly with your insurance company. We'll confirm your copay, deductible status, and any authorization requirements — so you have no surprises at your appointment.

What to Expect With Insurance

Most patients pay only their standard mental health copay (typically $20–$50 per visit) after their deductible is met. Mental health parity laws require insurance companies to cover psychiatric care at the same level as medical care.

Out-of-Pocket Costs

If you have a high-deductible plan, you may pay more out-of-pocket until your deductible is met. We offer flexible payment options and can work with you to create a payment schedule that fits your budget.

No Surprise Billing Policy

We are committed to full billing transparency. Under the No Surprises Act, you have the right to a Good Faith Estimate of costs before your appointment. We will always provide this upon request.

Verify Your Coverage

Submit your insurance information and we'll verify your mental health benefits within one business day.

Insurance Verification Request

We'll contact you within 1 business day with your benefits information. All information is HIPAA-protected.

Don't Have Insurance?

Quality psychiatric care should be accessible to everyone. We offer flexible payment options so cost is never a barrier to your healing.

Transparent, competitive self-pay rates for all services. Ask about our cash-pay pricing when scheduling — no hidden fees, ever.

Flexible Payment Plans

We offer payment plans for patients who need to spread the cost of care over time. We'll work with you to find an arrangement that fits your budget.

Sliding Scale Consideration

In some cases, we can discuss sliding scale fees based on income and financial need. Please ask about this option when you call to schedule.

Community Resources

We can refer you to additional community resources, state programs, and assistance options that may help cover the cost of your care.

Understanding Depression: Root Causes Beyond Pills

Depression is not simply a chemical imbalance. Discover the real factors — from vitamins to life circumstances — that Victoria's holistic approach investigates first.

Depression is one of the most over-simplified and under-treated conditions in modern psychiatry. The prevailing narrative — that depression is caused by a "chemical imbalance" correctable by antidepressants — has been repeatedly challenged by research and is simply not the full picture.

In my 30+ years of clinical practice, I've seen depression driven by vitamin D deficiency, hypothyroidism, iron deficiency anemia, unresolved grief, chronic stress, social isolation, and sleep deprivation — conditions that medication alone cannot address. A root-cause approach means investigating all of these before concluding that an antidepressant is the right first step.

Common Root Causes Worth Investigating

  • Vitamin D, B12, and iron deficiency
  • Thyroid dysfunction (hypothyroidism)
  • Chronic sleep deprivation or sleep disorders
  • Unresolved trauma or grief
  • Social isolation and lack of meaningful connection
  • Hormonal imbalances (including postpartum)

The Victory Village Approach

  • Comprehensive initial evaluation covering full medical and psychosocial history
  • Lab work referrals to rule out medical contributors
  • Lifestyle assessment including sleep, nutrition, and exercise
  • Personalized treatment plan — medication only when indicated and appropriate

Anxiety Management: Coping Skills That Actually Work

Beyond breathing exercises — practical, evidence-based coping strategies from a psychiatric nurse practitioner with 30+ years of real clinical experience.

Anxiety is the most common mental health condition in the United States, and yet the advice most people receive amounts to: "just breathe." While deep breathing is a useful tool, effective anxiety management requires a much broader toolkit — and the right tools vary by person, situation, and anxiety type.

Evidence-Based Strategies That Work

  • Scheduled "worry time" to contain anxiety to a contained daily period
  • Progressive muscle relaxation for physical tension
  • Cognitive restructuring — identifying and challenging anxious thoughts
  • Behavioral activation — gradually approaching avoided situations
  • Sleep hygiene optimization (anxiety and sleep are deeply interconnected)
  • Limiting caffeine and alcohol, which amplify anxiety

When Coping Skills Aren't Enough

  • If anxiety is interfering with work, relationships, or daily function
  • If you're relying on avoidance to manage anxiety
  • If panic attacks are becoming more frequent or severe
  • If anxiety coexists with depression (common and very treatable)

Telehealth vs. In-Person: Which Is Right for You?

Both have real advantages. Learn how to choose the format that fits your life, preferences, and mental health goals — there's no wrong answer.

When Victory Village launched its telehealth services, many patients were initially skeptical — would virtual care really match the quality of in-person appointments? The answer, consistently, has been yes. But both formats have real and distinct advantages that make one or the other a better fit for different people.

Telehealth Is Better If…

  • You have limited transportation or mobility challenges
  • You have social anxiety that makes in-person visits stressful
  • You prefer the privacy and comfort of your own home
  • You have a busy schedule that makes travel difficult
  • You live in a rural area far from in-person providers

In-Person Is Better If…

  • You prefer face-to-face human connection
  • You find it hard to focus in your home environment
  • You need a dedicated "mental health space" separate from your daily life
  • You experience severe symptoms that may benefit from in-person assessment

At Victory Village, both options deliver the same standard of clinical care. You can switch between formats based on your schedule and preferences — there is no wrong choice.

What to Expect From Psychiatric Medication — And What It Can't Do

Psychiatric medication is a powerful tool when used correctly — but it's not a cure-all. Here's what to realistically expect from medication management.

One of the most common misconceptions about psychiatric medication is that it works immediately and completely. The reality is more nuanced — and understanding that nuance leads to much better treatment outcomes.

What Medication Can Do

  • Reduce the intensity and frequency of symptoms significantly
  • Create a neurological foundation that makes therapy and coping more effective
  • Restore sleep, appetite, and basic daily functioning
  • Stabilize mood in conditions like bipolar disorder
  • Reduce psychotic symptoms and support reality-testing

What Medication Cannot Do

  • Resolve the underlying life circumstances driving symptoms
  • Replace therapy, social connection, or lifestyle change
  • Produce results overnight — most medications take 2–6 weeks to work
  • Work the same way for every person

At Victory Village, medication is always discussed openly — including its purpose, realistic expectations, potential side effects, and alternatives. You will never be prescribed something you don't understand.

30 Years of Experience: Why Holistic Care Matters

What 30+ years of diverse clinical experience — from nursing homes to psychosis units — taught one PMHNP-BC about treating the whole person.

When I started my healthcare career as a CNA in 1994, I had no idea I would one day be running my own psychiatric practice. But the experiences I accumulated over those 30 years — in nursing homes, correctional facilities, HIV clinics, crisis units, and psychosis wards — shaped a philosophy of care that I believe is genuinely different from what most patients have experienced.

The patients I've treated have faced every imaginable combination of challenges: poverty, trauma, medical illness, substance use, incarceration, social isolation, domestic violence, and grief. These experiences taught me that mental health cannot be separated from the rest of a person's life.

What Holistic Care Actually Means

  • Investigating medical contributors before prescribing
  • Taking social history as seriously as medical history
  • Coordinating with primary care, therapists, and community supports
  • Educating patients so they become partners in their own care
  • Treating the person, not just the diagnosis

Key Takeaways

  • Mental health is inseparable from physical and social wellbeing
  • Diversity of clinical experience improves diagnostic accuracy
  • Taking time to truly know a patient produces better outcomes
  • Patients deserve to be partners in their care, not passive recipients

Recognizing When You Need Professional Help

Many people wait too long to seek mental health support. Here are the signs that it's time to reach out — and why earlier is always better.

One of the most common things I hear from new patients is: "I should have come sooner." Mental health symptoms tend to escalate gradually, and it's easy to normalize chronic suffering — to assume that feeling anxious, exhausted, or sad all the time is just "how I am." It isn't.

Signs It's Time to Seek Help

  • You've felt persistently low, anxious, or hopeless for two or more weeks
  • Your symptoms are interfering with work, relationships, or daily functioning
  • You're using substances to cope with emotional pain
  • You're withdrawing from people and activities you used to enjoy
  • You're having thoughts of self-harm or that things would be better without you
  • Coping strategies that used to work have stopped working
  • Others in your life have expressed concern about your wellbeing

If any of these describe your experience, please reach out. You don't need to be in a full crisis to deserve care. The earlier you address mental health challenges, the faster and more completely you can recover.

Key Takeaways

  • Normalizing chronic suffering delays the help you deserve
  • Earlier intervention leads to faster, more complete recovery
  • You don't need to be in crisis to deserve psychiatric care
